Acquiring skill?

I am embarking on my first blog with a certain amount of trepidation, not to say suspicion.  I have consciously stayed away from social media up until now and having read the info for 23 things have still got reservations (and still feel there is a certain amount of propagandising that makes me feel I would like to turn around and walk the other way, preferably carrying something (a book) that does not need a battery or electricity to make it work) – but am willing to give anything a go.

I can see that the immediacy of the medium and the wide coverage that will be achieved means that blogs, etc. can be of enormous use in spreading information, new techniques and encouraging discussion and skill sharing.  It is very easy to become an island in one’s work, forgetting to reap the benefits of other experiences and skills out there, as well as sharing one’s own.

Both my areas of work, in the Library, and the theatre, rely on the use of words, both written and spoken; both professions are constantly changing, in libraries more quickly that I have ever experienced in my career, with the extension of media, and in audio description, a relatively new profession that is evolving all the time.

At its best, and as a start, it encourages and enhances the ability to express oneself directly onto the electronic screen clearly and succinctly.
